Table Rock Lake guide, Larry “Doc” Seger breaks into PAA’s top ten

CPAA's Jim Thompson, right and Larry "Doc" Seger.

BRANSON, Mo. “I am honored to be fishing in the PAA this year and satisfied, at this point, with my tenth place finish in my first tournament,” said Larry “Doc” Seger, a Table Rock Lake guide from Kimberling City, Mo. Doc’s comment came shortly after the Professional Angler’s Association (PAA) held their first tournament of the “2011 Bass Pro Shops Tournament Series presented by Carrot Stix” on Lake Lanier in northeast Georgia March 31st through April 2nd.

“I caught every fish on a Chompers 3/8 ounce Pro Shaky Head Jig with a Green Pumpkin Salty Sinker soaked in Chompers Formula G Garlic,” he said. During the first two days he limited out, but on the last day he only caught two fish. He said that last day was windy, the bass had changed the way they were hitting and he had trouble feeling the hits. As a result, although he estimates he had about 10 bites, he only hooked and brought two to the boat.

Doc indicated that his satisfaction at this point stems from the fact that he took tenth place out of a field of over 60 of the finest professional fishermen in the country, won over $6,900 in his first PAA tournament and is in an excellent position to qualify for the “Toyota Texas Bass Classic” (TTBC) to be held October 28 – 30 at Lake Conroe in Conroe, TX. The top 15 finishers in the PAA’s regular tournament series, consisting of three tournaments, the one just completed at Lake Lanier, the second to be held on Table Rock Lake June 23 – 25 and the third on Neely Henry Lake in Gadsden, AL August 18 – 20, will go on to compete in the TTBC.

The TTBC has a unique championship format in that its field is made up of the top 15 fishermen from the three major national bass fishing circuits, the FLW, BASS, and the PAA all fishing against each other. Last year the TTBC was won by Brian Snowden of Reeds Spring, Mo, who bested Mike Iaconelli by just over a pound and won $110,000 and a new bass boat in the process.

Seger points that just qualifying for TTBC means that you have already earned tens of thousands of dollars in cash and prizes as a result of fishing just the three PAA Tournaments. “Depending on the number of competitors in each tournament there is up to $250,000 in cash and prizes to be won in each,” he continued.

He said that he is focusing on one tournament at a time with the next PAA tournament being conducted on his home lake and the lake that he guides on, “Table Rock Lake.” When asked if that gave him an advantage he said that although fishing your home lake is obviously an advantage that the playing field is leveled for all the fishermen by the PAA’s 30 day off limits rule. This rule prohibits any tournament fisherman from fishing on a tournament lake within 30 days of the tournament.

Doc says the journey with PAA has been a wonderful experience starting with his winning the Central Pro-Am Association’s “Angler of the Year” in 2010. One of the prizes for winning that title was an all expense ‘ride’ to fish the entire 2011 PAA Tournament Series, including paid entry fees, food, fuel and lodging allowances worth, with entry fees etc. over $18,000. He credits his experience in fishing with the Central Pro-Am Association over the years for helping put him his current position.

Jim Thompson the owner of Central Pro-Am Association said, “Larry is a great fisherman and all-around good guy. We congratulate him on his great finish, are very proud of his accomplishments and wish him well on his wonderful journey.”

Branson wins TripAdvisor recognition as one of “Great U.S. Destinations to Discover”

The Showboat Branson Belle cruising on Table Rock Lake combines the natural beauty of the Ozarks with great dining and entertainment.

“Over 7 million people a year get to experience firsthand what a great vacation destination Branson, Missouri is in terms of excitement, value and the number of things to do,” said Stephanie Milton, Director of Marketing for Branson Tourism Center, one of Branson’s largest and most respected vacation planning services. “Thanks to the willingness of many of them to share their opinion about what a great Branson experience they had with TripAdvisor®, Branson was recently named a winner of its inaugural “Travelers’ Choice® Family Award-winning Great U.S. Destinations to Discover.”

The award was announced in a recent TripAdvisor press release stating it was based on millions of reviews and opinions. The award went to those destinations receiving “the greatest number of recommendations from reviewers who traveled with family” and Branson was one of only ten named in the category of “Great U.S. Destinations to Discover.”

The narrative with the listing explains that “Branson is called the Live Music Show Capital of the World.” It explained the breadth of the entertainment offered by Branson shows pointing out that its 50 plus theatres offer “almost 90 music, magic and comedy shows on any given day.” The narrative also summed up some of the other great activities that Branson has to offer its natural native Ozark’s beauty and outdoor activities such as water sports, fishing, hiking and biking. Milton points out that Branson has the same quality and choice in its other attractions and activities as it does for live shows and outdoor activities.

She believes that with Branson attractions like Silver Dollar City, The Shepherd of the Hills, White Water Titanic Museum, Hollywood Wax Museum and Ripley’s Believe It or Not to the Butterfly Palace, The World’s Largest Toy Museum or one of Branson’s championship golf courses there are attractions and activities that will provide families with a constant stream of exciting ways to have fun together. “When Branson’s great shopping and all the other things that Branson has to offer are factored in, it’s easy to appreciate what a great destination city Branson is for families,” Milton added.

Milton points out that this most recent recognition follows Branson being recognized as “A Top Ten Family Destination for 2010” on Fodor’s Travel Blog, being selected by the “American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA)” as one of the most budget friendly destinations for travelers in 2009 and others. “The recognition from organizations such as TripAdvisor, ASTA and others is wonderful, but from a personal perspective, the real joy comes from seeing the smiles and excited looks on the faces of families as they experience the entertainment, fun, excitement and adventure that is Branson as they create memories they will remember for a lifetime.”

From shows to golf the Branson experience is quality

Payne Stewart Golf Course's beautiful 225 yard par 3 12th Hole named the "Easy Eight.*"

(Branson, MO) “A neat thing about Branson, Missouri is not just that it has so many things to do, but the quality of what it offers. From its live shows to its attractions, lakes, shopping, lodging, restaurants and other activities, Branson is known for the quality of the experience it provides,” said Levi Kurtright, Director of Marketing for Branson Tourism Center. “A recent online article by Golfweek entitled ‘Golfweek’s Best Courses You Can Play,’ illustrates the high quality of the golfing experience available in Branson,” he continued.

The article listed Golfweeks “best courses to play” by state. The number of courses per state varied based on course supply, population and level of play, but for the entire state of Missouri only five were listed. The Branson area has three of the five; Branson Creek, Payne Stewart and Murder Rock. Branson Creek and the Payne Stewart courses have been on the list before and Murder Rock is a new listing. All three courses have been beautifully integrated into the natural topography of the Ozarks and are as beautiful as they are challenging. In addition, each has different length tee areas providing a “championship” golfing experience for just about every level of player.

The $32 million Payne Stewart Golf Club is Branson’s newest golf course and is located within the city limits of Branson on the north end of Branson in the Branson Hills Development just off of Branson Hills Parkway. The course was designed by Chuck Smith with consultation from PGA golfer Bobby Clampett as a tribute course to the late Payne Stewart. Each hole is named and has a plaque to honor his career and memory adding even more excitement and enjoyment to the golfing experience. This championship 18 hole course plays 7,324 yards from its longest tees and 5,323 yards from its shortest tees.

The picturesque and challenging championship courses of Branson Creek and Murder Rock are located just a short 10 minute drive south of Branson near the Branson Airport in the Branson Creek Development. Branson Creek plays 7,036 yards from its longest tees and 5,032 yards from its shortest tees. The Murder Rock Golf and Country Club is 6,727 yards from its longest tees and 5,627 from its shortest.

Branson Tourism Center’s Kurtright points out that in addition to the courses mentioned in the article there are other exciting golfing opportunities in Branson including two championship courses located within the city limits of Branson, the Thousand Hills Golf Course and the newly renovated Pointe Royale Golf Course. He said, “Branson has a choice of courses offering a great golfing experience and challenge for both beginners and more advanced players.”

To avoid disappointment and ensure getting a convenient tee time Kurtright suggests making advance arrangements For additional information on any of the courses mentioned in this article, tee times or tickets for any of Branson’s shows and attractions or for lodging arrangements please contact the Branson Tourism Center (BTC), Branson’s largest and most respected vacation planning services for “one stop service” for all that is Branson. Escape to Branson for Spring Break excitement and adventure

The exciting and spectacular view of the natural beauty of the Ozarks from "Wildfire," Silver Dollar city's world class coaster.

Within a few short weeks, the signs of another Spring in Branson will begin to manifest itself. The first blush of Spring offers the opportunity to escape from the inside confines of winter to the freedom of the outdoors and the promise of the fun, recreation and excitement that lies just ahead. Spring in Branson, Missouri, especially during Spring Break, is a great way to start the fulfillment of that promise.

The natural beauty of Spring in the Ozarks will start blossoming forth during Spring Break as the Dogwood and Redbud trees bloom and the excitement and adventure of Branson’s 2011 season bursts forth. The opening of Silver Dollar City along with more of its live shows, outdoor attractions and other activities provide a great reason to escape to Branson to share and enjoy the excitement, fun and adventure of Spring.

Even as the snow is flying there are thoughts of “Spring Break” and the fun it will be. In fact, many of those within a day’s drive of Branson are probably wondering if Spring Break will be shortened to make up for the “snow days” that have been taken. One of the neat things about Branson is that all its fun, excitement, entertainment and natural beauty are just a short drive away for so many, making it an ideal family Spring Break escape to something that is fresh, exciting and different, whether it’s for a day or two, a week or more.

The majority of Branson’s major attractions such as the Titanic Museum, Hollywood Wax Museum, Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, Veterans Memorial Museum, Dinosaur Museum and many others are open year round. Spring brings the excitement of the reopening of many of Branson’s other exciting attractions such as the Branson Scenic Railway, Branson Landing Cruises, Ride the Ducks, Branson’s many outdoor mini golf courses such as “Shoot for the Stars Mini Golf” and of course, its biggest and most popular attraction, Silver Dollar City.

Silver Dollar City, an internationally recognized 1880’s theme park, will open its 51st season in conjunction with the celebration of Spring Break. It is built to blend in with the beauty of the Ozark Hills that surround it and is one of the most unique theme parks in the world.

Silver Dollar City has over 30 rides including its high-flying multi-looping world class roller coaster “WildFire” reaching speeds of up to 66 miles per hour; some of the best live shows in Branson; demonstrating craftsmen working at crafts that have been passed down from generation to generation; unique shopping and food and a series of six world class festivals starting with World-Fest, the country’s largest international festival, running from April 7 through May 8.

Branson’s fantastic line-up of live shows will be bursting out with their new shows for 2011 during the Spring Break offering a variety of live entertainment that is unrivaled in any destination city of its size anywhere. Shows as varied as the Acrobats of China, The Baldknobbers Jamboree, Presleys’ Country Jubilee, Haygoods, Hughes Brothers, George Dyer, Grand Country, Comedy Jubilee, Shoji Tabuchi, Pierce Arrow, Jim Stafford, Doug Gabriel, Legends in Concert and Amazing Pets, to mention just a few, will provide a “live show escape” for just about everyone.

The show scene in Branson during Spring Break gets even more exciting when some of the limited engagement performances are considered. Stars like Neal McCoy, the Oakridge Boys, Charlie Daniel’s Band and Sawyer Brown just add to the variety of exciting entertainment choices available in Branson during the Spring Break.

Not only does Branson provide an escape to great shows, attractions and entertainment, but to a great shopping experience as well. Its three factory discount malls, countless specialty shops in historic downtown Branson and throughout Branson and Branson Landing, with its lakeside location, fire and water show, restaurants, Bass Pro Shop and 100 other retail shops, provide a unique and unparalleled shopping opportunity.

Branson’s world class golf courses will be open for your Spring Break enjoyment. Courses including the Payne Stewart Golf Course at Branson Hills, Thousand Hills, Pointe Royale and Branson Creek, among others, will provide a golfing challenge for the beginner as well as the seasoned champion tournament player.

Spring in Branson provides an excellent opportunity to experience the natural wonder and beauty of the Ozarks. Whether its fishing for largemouth bass or crappie on Table Rock Lake or Rainbow Trout on Lake Taneycomo; a dinner cruise on the Show Boat Branson Belle; a tour of the Shepherd of the Hills Trout Hatchery or just a walk or hike on one of Branson’s many accessible trails or walk ways such as the Branson Landing Boardwalk, you will be surrounded and amazed by the natural wonder of an Ozark’s Spring in Branson.

“If you are like most people your first Spring Break escape to Branson will more than likely lead you to come back to that special place visitors call ‘Branson’ and we call ‘home,'” said Tammy Johnson, the Director of Operations for the Branson Tourism Center, Branson’s largest and most respected vacation planning service.

Shepherd of the Hills Hatchery hatches family fun as well as trout

Entrance to Shepherd of the Hills Conservation Center with the top of Table Rock Dam in the background.

Old man Winter has given Branson one of those great weekends reminding us that, although winter is not gone, spring, and all the wonderful outdoor activities that follow is just around the corner. “It’s hard to believe,” began Tammy Johnson, the Director of Operations for the Branson Tourism Center. “It’s January 29 and the temperature is 70 plus degrees, sunshine and azure blue skies. What a wonderful day to be outdoors.”

“The ‘Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery’ is an excellent place for families to experience the Ozark outdoors and much more,” Johnson added. “Although it is Missouri’s largest trout hatchery and produces over 1.2 million Rainbow and Brown Trout annually, it is filled with interesting things that families can share together, both indoors and outdoors.”

The portal to all the hatchery offers is its Conservation Center located near the foot of Table Rock Dam. It is operated by the Missouri Department of Conservation, free and open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with expanded hours from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The Center itself has nature related exhibits which change seasonally, trout rearing and spawning exhibits, a 60 seat auditorium featuring the multimedia presentation “Ozark Trout” and a large glassed-in aquarium that permits an interesting look at large Rainbow and Brown Trout. It is designed so that the trout and those viewing them are looking at each other “eye ball to eye ball.”

You can exit the Center and take a self guided tour of the hatchery “race ways” seeing hundreds of thousands of trout from lunker brooders to those just a few inches in length that have just come from inside the hatchery. Trout food is available from quarter vending machines for those who want to feed the trout. Between Memorial and Labor Day guided tours of the hatchery are conducted on weekdays departing the Center’s lobby at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m.

The hatchery’s four hiking trails are also easily accessed from the Center. Each provides a convenient, level and accessible way to view the plants, trees, animals, birds and natural beauty of the Ozarks. This writers personal favorite is the four tenths of a mile long, “White River Corridor Trail” because it parallels Lake Taneycomo for almost its entire length. Maps of the trails and current trail conditions are available from the attendant in the Centers Lobby.

Branson Tourism Center’s Johnson notes that the Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery is just one of Branson’s many attractions and ways that families can have fun together every day of the year.

The one must do thing in Branson is _____________________?

Glass blowing is just one of the many crafts demonstrated at Silver Dollar City.

People coming to Branson for the first time might wonder, “If I do nothing else, what is the one thing I must see or do while I am in Branson?” When the question was recently posed to Tammy Johnson, the Director of Operations for the Branson Tourism Center she said, “With so much to see and do in Branson live shows of every kind, attractions, museums, shopping, water fun and recreation on its thousands of acres of lakes and the natural beauty of the Ozark Mountains that’s an easy question to answer, have fun!” she continued with a twinkle in her eye.

Johnson explained that she knows that when most people ask that question they are looking for a specific thing to see or do, but that the answer for each individual or family is different. There are many who would say that the “one must do thing in Branson” is to spend a day at its most popular and biggest attraction, the 1880’s theme park, Silver Dollar City. Even within this group there are those who time their Branson visit to coincide with one of its six annual major world class festivals World-Fest, Bluegrass & BBQ, Kids Fest, Southern Gospel Picnic, National Harvest Festival and Old Time Christmas.

Others believe that the “one must do thing in Branson is” to see one of its live shows; after all Branson is referred to as the “Live music show capital of the world.” There are those who have been coming to Branson for decades who would not think that a trip to Branson was complete unless they saw the Baldknobbers Jamboree, the show that started it all or Presleys’ Country Jubilee, Branson’s first show on the “strip.” Others would say, their “one must do thing in Branson is” to see their favorite show which could come from a list as diverse as the Grand Jubilee, Comedy Jamboree, Amazing Pets, Duttons, Haygoods, Yakov, Clay Cooper, NOAH the Musical, Hamner Barber, Bill Medley, Paul Revere and the Raiders or George Dyer, Pierce Arrow, Liver Pool Legends, the Oakridge Boys or one of Branson’s many other shows.

Now everyone is going to eat, but there are groups, families and individuals who come to Branson and to whom the trip would not be complete without sharing a meal together, at least one time, at a particular restaurant. Some would say the “one must do thing in Branson is” to visit historic downtown Branson and Dick’s 5 & 10, Branson’s most unique shopping experience.

Still others might say that the “one must do thing in Branson is” trout fishing on Lake Taneycomo or bass fishing on Table Rock Lake. To others it could be boating, water skiing swimming or perhaps a dinner cruise on the fabulous Showboat Branson Belle. Some families do not consider their trip to Branson complete without splashing into Table Rock Lake on Ride the Ducks or making a trip down to Branson Landing.

“Just remember the ‘one must do thing in Branson,’ have fun and when you return, as the majority of the people who visit Branson do, you’ll have your own ‘one must do thing in Branson,'”Johnson said. “The neat thing about Branson is that with all there is to do the ‘one must do thing in Branson’ will change from visit to visit or grow into the ‘two or more must do things in Branson,'” she continued. Johnson suggests contacting the Branson Tourism Center (BTC), one of Branson’s largest and most respected vacation planning services for information on any of the attractions or shows mentioned in this article or any of Branson’s other shows and attractions or for lodging arrangements. BTC can be reached by either calling their toll free number 1-800-785-1550 or through their website www.BransonTourismCenter.com.

Shane Long wins Table Rock Lake PAA Bass Pro Shops Tournament

Table Rock Lake PAA Bass Pro Shops Tournament Series Champion Shane Long with Championship Trophy.

“What a nail biter,” said Levi Kurtright, Director of Marketing for the Branson Tourism Center, one of the hosts of the Table Rock Lake PAA Bass Pro Shops Tournament Series presented by Carrot Stix. “Missourian Shane Long won the tournament with a total weight of 42.34 pounds, but the suspense went right up to the final seconds of the weigh-in.”

The three day tournament launched from the State Park Marina on Table Rock Lake October 14 through 16. After the first two days the field was narrowed down to the 24 finalists who fished in the Final on the 16th. The first two weigh-ins were held at the State Park Marina, but the weigh-in for the Final was held at the Fountain at Branson Landing. “It was a spectacular setting for the ending to a great tournament and the 2010 PAA Bass Pro Shops Tournament Series” said Kurtright.

For his efforts Long won a new Nitro Z-8 boat rigged with a Mercury Optimax 225 and T-H Marine Atlas Jackplate and $5,000. He said he was using a white Luck E Strike “3-J” jigging spoon, 20-pound test Seaguar fluorocarbon line, and a Falcon crankbait rod throwing the spoon to the back of boat slips. It should be noted that the particular spoon Long used is no longer in production “but is reportedly coming back to the market.”

Angler after angler praised the quality of the fishing on Table Rock Lake. Many said they have caught hundreds of bass during the three day tournament and that although they might not have been big enough for tournament use they were sure fun to catch. Too, there were the reports of plenty of bigger tournament changing bass that got off.

Jim Thompson, a long time tournament fisherman and the owner of the Central Pro-Am Association said, “It was a great event. Although the warm water, changing thermocline and fluctuating weather conditions presented challenges it was a great tournament and the reports by the fishermen on the numbers of bass they caught speaks well for the quality of fishing that can be expected on Table Rock Lake now and in the future.”

The Top Five Finishers, their Home State and their tournament totals are as follows:

1. Shane Long, Missouri, 42.34
2. Aaron Martens, Alabama, 36.41
3. Tommy Biffle, Oklahoma, 36.27
4. Kelly Power, Missouri, 36.16
5. Brian Snowden, Missouri, 35.65

“If you are a bass fisherman, and haven’t fished Table Rock Lake in Branson, it’s an experience you should not miss,” said Branson Tourism Center’s Kurtright. He also reemphasized what an honor it was for the Branson Tourism Center, one of Branson’s largest and most respected vacation planning services, to help host the tournament. In his first ever PAA Tournament event, Shane Long, the leader going into today’s Finals indicated just how important every fish is. He said, “I got lucky, got quality bites and put them in the boat. I lost a big one Thursday and I think that may come back to haunt me.”
