Thanksgiving in Branson

"Branson's 'Veterans Homecoming Week', Americas largest 'Veterans Day celebration,' starting on November 5 and running through November 11 is a special and exciting time for us in Branson," said Tammy Johnson, the Director of Operations for the Branson Tourism Center. "It gives us a special, dedicated opportunity to honor Veterans, active duty Armed Forces personnel and their families that goes beyond the way they are honored routinely in Branson on a daily basis. This year we have a large number of events."

Branson's IMAX Entertainment Complex will be hosting a Military Film Festival during Branson's Veterans Week, along with special guests and a life-size WWII display. The public will have the opportunity to see three compelling documentaries and presentations.

"Ghost Army", tells the history of the secret U.S. Army unit of 1100 troops created in 1944 and implemented until the final stages of World War II in the fight against German troops in various parts of Europe. They used a combination of visual, sonic and radio deception to convince the enemy of the presence of specific Army units that were in fact operating elsewhere.
During the film presentations, the public will have an opportunity to meet the director and author of "Ghost Army" Mr. Rick Beyer; and hear his story and passion for exposing the 'secret unit' after over 40 years as closely held military intelligence. A life-size inflatable replica tank that was actually part of the secret battalion will be on display inside the IMAX Complex.
"Korea: We Called It War" based on a book of the same name by Denzil Batson, tells the harrowing experiences of front line infantry men in the Korean War, long known as the 'Forgotten War.'
The third documentary film, "A Patriotic Education: To Remember. To Pass it on. Never To Forget." is presented by students of College of the Ozarks. In 2009, College of the Ozarks began the Patriotic Education Travel Program designed to provide once in a lifetime experiences for students and veterans from WWII, the Cold War, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The program pairs their students with veterans, taking them back to the battlefields where they had fought. The film documents this program, that honoring veterans and continuing to educate the younger generation, instilling an appreciation for the sacrifices of American soldiers.

This is an hour long ceremony, during which we remember each of the 65 submarines that have been lost since the inception of the Submarine Service of the United States Navy. We start with the sounding of the diving alarm (klaxon), followed by the reading of the circumstances of each boats loss, extinguishing a candle and tolling a bell for each boat. At the completion of the ceremony, we have a bugler blow taps.
